About Graco In 1942, Russell Gray and Robert Cone formed Graco Metal Products, in Philadelphia, PA. For 11 years, the firm fabricated machine and car parts for local manufacturers. In 1953, Gray left the firm, leaving Cone as sole owner. Cone decided to manufacture his own line of products, but had trouble coming up with ideas. Enter David Saint, an engineer, tinkerer, and stained glass artisan who worked for Graco. Saint, himself a father of nine, was intrigued when an associate told him how his wife would soothe their tired and cranky baby while swinging in a backyard glider swing. Acting on this inspiration, he went to the drawing board and 18 months of hard work later, the world's first wind-up infant swing, the Graco Swyngomatic, was born. Graco sold millions of Swyngomatics in the coming years, becoming one of the world's leading manufacturers of juvenile products in the process. Today, Graco is a Newell Rubbermaid company, with 1500 associates worldwide. While a half-century has brought many changes to Graco, their dedication and commitment to designing and manufacturing top-quality products remains, and continues on. Great carseat for the money September 10, 2010 Christy (Centennial, CO USA) I researched car seats and found that this one had good ratings. I am glad I purchased this one. My daughter loves the way it feels and the "secret" pockets. The cup holder being part of the armrest is wonderful. We haven't had nearly as many drops. The seat is solid and easier to install than our last car seat. I love that it converts to a backed booster and then backless booster. This should be my last car seat I have to purchase. I have the adjustable "wings" headrest that is nice. We have been on 2 trips that have been for over 11 hours each way. She did great and wasn't sore or uncomfortable. It doesn't rub her spine either. Other reviews complained about the weight. If you are traveling by plane this could be a problem. But I knew what it weighed before purchasing. Now for the cons. The crotch buckle is short. I do wish it had another notch to move it forward. It makes it hard to buckle and if a kid is on the higher end of growth curve this could be a problem. Once it goes into the booster the buckle goes away. Another problem is lifting a kid into the seat. The armrests are high and I have banged my daughters head a few times on the ceiling, especially when we are in a hurry. These 2 cons are why I didn't give 5 stars. Every car seat we have owned has a con (last one the cup holder broker immediately and it was hard to release the straps). As long as the con doesn't sacrifice safety & is minor I can live with it. I really am happy with this car seat overall.
I see no reason for a pricey seat September 7, 2010 SarahDef (Chicago, IL) We used Britax seats for our son, and when it came time for a booster we assumed we would do the frontier. Then, I stumbled upon this seat. Based on the positive reviews, I decided to give it a shot. I couldn't like it more!! It is vey well made and has the same excellent safety ratings as its $100 more expensive counterpart. I see no reason to spend an extra $100 just for the Britax name. This is an excellent seat.. I am off two buy another one for our second car.
I Feel Like My Daughter is Safe in this Car Seat September 3, 2010 Karon 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought the Nautilus over a year ago for our 3 year old daughter. She had previously been in a Britax Roundabout, but her younger brother grew into it. At this point I feel that the seat has some upsides and downsides.
Pros:
1. Versatile - can be used as a 5 point harness seat, a booster with a back, or a backless booster
2. Comfortable - My daughter has never complained about being uncomfortable in the Nautilus. She has fallen asleep in it numerous times and has traveled in it on trips as long as 4 1/2 hours.
4. Cup Holder - This is my daughter's favorite feature!
5. Cubbies in the armrests - Great for storing toys, snacks, and child-size sunglasses
6. Easy to loosen and tighten the straps
7. Seems sturdy and safe
Cons:
1. The buckle is very difficult to attach and detach! I almost always need to use two hands and as a mom, it seems like I usually only have one free! I much prefer the buckles on Britax car seats - they are so much easier to do with one hand.
2. This seat is wide! It takes up a lot of room in the car.
3. Heavy (I guess a safe car seat is going to be heavy)
4. A pain to take apart and wash. We've only done it once, but after that experience we made a "no eating in the car" rule. We don't want to have to clean it again!
All things considered, I do think I would buy this car seat again.
Super Seat August 30, 2010 Julie (USA) We really like this seat. We bought one for my oldest daughter almost two years ago, and we liked it so well that we bought a second one for my younger daughter. I didn't even consider looking at another seat, this one does everything we need. The girls love their seats. They sleep in them, and are comfortable for short or long trips. They especially like the deep pockets for toys and the cup holders. The harness is easy to use, and my husband didn't curse very much installing them, so I think that is relatively easy too (we don't have LATCH in our car, so have to do the seat belt and clip routine). I know you can easily spend a small fortune on car seats, but I can't see how a $[...] seat could be any better than this one. Oh, and the Dori color pattern is super cute if you have a little girl. It's kind of hard to see in the picture, but it's a light gray base with a lavender flower contrast pattern and pink piping trim.
Crotch Strap to tight August 29, 2010 Jennifer (Tucson, AZ USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
We originally decided to get the Nautilus because it had most of the features we were looking for and it was cheaper than the Britax Frontier. After less than a week we ended up returning it and spending the extra $$ for the Frontier.
Our biggest complaint was the tight crotch strap. My son is just over two years old and 30 lbs and already the crotch strap is under his butt. Upon reading the materials and contacting Graco you discover that once that happens you can no longer use the 5 pt harness and the seat MUST be converted to a booster. Not only is that not what we wanted but it is illegal for a 2 year old to be in a booster seat!
At the store we got out our measuring tape and Frontier's crotch notches begin where the Nautilus ends! I am convinced that the Nautilus is made for younger naive parents who don't realize how much (and in what ways) their children will grow.
If you have super skinny, rail-thin children maybe this will work for a while. If you have a normal child be prepared to buy another seat down the road.
